On February 15, 1996, while running for a seat in the Illinois state senate, then candidate Barack Obama was a firm supporter of same sex marriage. In a survey conducted by the Windy City Times, Obama wrote, "I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages." That's pretty strong language . . . Sounds like a man with deep convictions . . . however . . .
During Obama's bid for president, clearly pandering to the evangelical Christian community, Obama was quick to waffle on his pro-same sex marriage position. On August 16, 2008, this mega-waffle happened at Rick Warren's mega-church during Warren's non-debate debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. Obama said: "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman," and added, "I am not somebody who promotes same-sex marriage, but I do believe in civil unions."
He doesn't promote same-sex marriage? What happened to "favor legalizing" and that bit about fighting?
Translation: Obama was for same-sex marriage before he was against it. I know, I know, can't we just leave the guy alone so he can eat his waffle?
