“I am a Christian, and so although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman.” In the same interview, Obama added that this is something each state should determine.

Sen. Obama wrote a letter to San Francisco’s Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club in which he stated he said:
“As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act . . . and that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.”

This is not a waffle. Giving LGBT EQUAL rights does not mean granting the word "Marriage."

You are aware that these two statements aren't mutually exclusive, right?
Obama has always been pro-civil union for gay and lesbian couples with equal rights under the law, but he believes in defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

What part of freedom to associate don't you get?
What part of the 14th Amendment slips your grasp?
