The island country of Cuba is know for their fine cigars. It’s also been under the thumb of a communist dictator for almost half of a century. Which is why American has had an embargo against Cuba since the early Sixties. Obama wanted to end the embargo, then said he’d keep it, then said he’d end it, before he said he’d keep it.
January, 2004
Obama announced the time was now “to end the embargo with Cuba” primarily because it had “utterly failed in the effort to overthrow Castro.”
(“Top Obama Flip-Flops,” The Washington Post, 2/25/08)
AND
January 20, 2004
Obama speaking to students: “I think it’s time for us to end the embargo with Cuba.”
(Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois)
THEN:
August 2007
When talking to an audience of Cuban Americans, Obama announced that as president, he wouldn’t “take off the embargo.” Why? Waffle alert: Obama thinks the embargo against Cuba is “an important inducement for change.”

THEN
August 21, 2007
The lead paragraph says it all: “Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is leaping into the long-running Cuba debate by calling for the U.S. to ease restrictions for Cuban-Americans who want to visit the island or send money home.”
(“Obama Calls for Easing Cuba Embargo,” The Associated Press.)
THEN
May 23, 2008
Obama announced he’d meet with Cuban leader Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother, “only when we have an opportunity to advance the interests of the United States and to advance the cause of Freedom for the Cuban people.” He added he “would maintain the existing trade embargo to use as leverage for winning Democratic change in the Communist island nation.”
(Christopher Wills, “Obama Says His Cuba Policy Is Based On ‘Libertad,’” Associated Press, 5/23/08)
